Get this!!! While October’s modern and official birthstones are opal and tourmaline, Aquamarine was historically considered one of the traditional birthstones for the month of October!

This shift happened because modern lists were created with changing times and preferences for different colors and qualities of gemstones.

The modern birthstone began to be standardized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Then by the early 20th century, the American National Retail Jewelers Association (now Jewelers of America) formalized the U.S. birthstone list in 1912.

The name Aquamarine comes from the Latin aqua marinus, meaning “water of the sea,” and refers to its sparkling ocean-like color.

Aquamarine is a stone of breath, the respiratory tract, and the lungs. It can help heal sinus conditions and frequent coughing, and is effective for hay fever and other chronic allergies. Aquamarine is a cooling stone, countering infections and useful for laryngitis, strep throat or a sore throat.
